Why are transformers divided into oil-type, gas-type and dry-type

what is the difference between oil-type, gas-type and dry-type? In this article, HV Hipot will introduce these three different test transformers for you in detail.

Because of the difference in the internal structure of the test transformer, there are three types of test transformers, all of which have the same function, but in essence, the internal insulating materials are different, so these three test transformers have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The dry-type test transformer is manufactured by using the internal iron core and epoxy casting technology. It is integrally formed, without inflation and without insulating oil. The cost is low and the price is cheap, but it is large in size and heavy in weight. , it is almost impossible to maintain, and users need to be extra careful during use, so general small projects prefer to use this device.

The oil-immersed test transformer, as its name implies, uses insulating oil internally to perform insulation and arc extinguishing. It has many advantages such as low cost, fast boost, strong voltage resistance, convenient and cheap maintenance, etc. If it is accidentally damaged during use, it can be taken apart. It is carried out by replacing the copper core or replacing the insulating oil, so the cost of procurement and use is relatively low, but because the interior is equipped with insulating oil, the equipment is relatively heavy, which is not conducive to moving to outdoor use, and there are also disadvantages such as oil pollution. .

The gas-filled test transformer uses SF6 gas for insulation and arc extinguishing. Because it is gas-filled, it has the advantages of small size, light weight, clean and oil-free, but if the internal gas escapes, it is very difficult to repair and can only be returned to the factory. It is troublesome to handle and use, and at the same time, the cost of the equipment is relatively high, causing the price to rise naturally.

In general, oil-type, air-filled and dry-type test transformers have their own advantages and disadvantages, which meet the different needs of different electric power workers.
